Frequently Asked Questions

Where does the BNZ MarketView data come from?

BNZ MarketView is based on the spending and transactions of BNZ credit and debit (eftpos) cardholders. It excludes business and corporate cards. The transaction values include GST, but exclude cash out with purchases. BNZ Marketview does not pick up Hire Purchase, direct debit/credit payments or cash based spending.

How representative are BNZ cardholders of the national population?

BNZ cardholders provide an excellent cross section of New Zealand consumers. The base is under weight in the under 15 year old market. NB: BNZ requires credit card customers to be aged 18 years and over and debit card holders to be 13 years or over.

I am a BNZ cardholder. How are my details kept confidential?

The BNZ MarketView database contains no personal identifiers. All customer names, addresses, card and account numbers are removed by BNZ and replaced with geographic and demographic codes before being used in BNZ MarketView reports.

I am a retailer/business owner. Can anyone see my business?

No. BNZ Marketview provides a breakdown of spending for a client against a basket of competitors. The size of the basket is sufficient to ensure it is not possible to determine the performance of an individual store or brand.

How reliable are the BNZ MarketView figures?

BNZ MarketView has been active for over seven years. It is by numerous New Zealand retailers, from national chains to small independent stores, across a range of retail categories. In addition to our own comparisons with the Retail Trade Survey, these companies are frequently comparing BNZ MarketView reports to their own sales figures from stores across the country, where any discrepancies would be obvious. On this basis we are confident BNZ MarketView provides an accurate representation of consumer spending in New Zealand.

How up to date is BNZ MarketView information?

BNZ MarketView data is produced daily by BNZ, and is generally available for reporting within four working days of the actual transaction date.

What business categories does BNZ MarketView cover?

BNZ MarketView covers any industry using eftpos or credit cards as a payment method. Its core strength is in the retail categories, where cards are a major method of payment.
